The Goofy’s Pizza in Kita-ku, Osaka
As part of our coverage of the best pizza in Osaka, Japan, we present this review of The Goofy’s Pizza in the Kaneicho area of Kita-ku, Osaka, a short walk from Tenjimbashisuji 6-chome Station.

Osaka has a fantastic pizza culture, including multiple places that serve “New York City style” slices. Relatively close by you can find both Hughes Pizza in Kita-ku, and Henry’s Pizza in Chuo-ku. There are many kinds of pizza in Osaka, but if you want slices, The Goofy’s bring you that sliced variety.

I came in on a Friday night (a little late), perhaps the busiest night of the week. There was a pile of bikes out front, deliveries going the door. Osaka’s Goofy’s pizza has the classic glass case, showing off several pies; even late on a Friday when I arrived, there were many slices to choose from.

The Goofy’s in Kita-ku does offer a straight-up pepperoni, and there were several other choices on the night I was there. All together there was: Pepperoni pizza, The Goofy Lover’s pizza, Teriyaki (chicken?) pizza, a Mac n Cheese pizza, a Honey Cheese pizza, their Supreme pizza, and a special (which may have been mushrooms).

Like most pizza slice places in Osaka; you choose your slice, and they put it back in the oven for you, to heat it up. I ordered a slice of Goofy Lover’s and a slice of Supreme.

The Goofy Lover’s is basically a meat lover’s pizza; bacon, Italian sausage, and, of course pepperoni. I wouldn’t call it stacked, but by Japanese standards, there was a lot of meat on that pizza (which I appreciated), +1 for Goofy’s. Goofy’s Supreme pizza was something like a standard “combination” pizza from the US, with a mix of meat and vegetables (in this case, Italian sausage, mushrooms, and an unusual inclusion of broccoli).

The slices are big, and come out of the often crispy. I generally like to give every pizza the “can you pick it up?” test. And Goofy’s passes that test better than most. The Goofy’s pizza slices are じょうぶ (丈夫, sturdy).

While I didn’t any myself, The Goofy’s in Osaka offers a couple of varieties of “dessert pizza.”
While I love desert (and have a real passion for cookies and Osaka bakeries), I’m not sure that dessert pizza should be a thing. In this case, The Goofy’s does an M&M’S pizza (as part of general appreciation for American snack foods). They also feature an Oreo cookie pizza (that may have had whipped cream on it?). I cannot say I am recommending either of those, but a couple of fully-grown men had the Oreo, and then chased it down with chocolate brownie (on the side). No one eats pizza because it’s healthy, but this may be taking the joy of pizza a little too far.

The music was good; American RnB tunes played overhead. I was in the shop for 10 minutes before I realized they were music videos, and there was video projected (about four feet tall) on one of the walls of the narrow shop.

There is so much good pizza in Osaka, I’m not sure The Goofy’s is a “serious” contender for the leaderboard, but it was a fun place, and if you can get a table, a comfortable one.

And that part of Kita-ku, around Tenjimbashisuji 6-chome Station (just north of the more hectic Tenma district) was a very cool part of town. Nearby is the craft beer bar torne_craftbeer (over-priced, but an interest spot to check out). If you want to get in more trouble, it’s a short walk to the crowds in Tenma (where I tried the Osaka beer bar Beer Belly).
